  • For the average person, it’s hard to tell when your home’s wiring is reaching the end of its lifespan. As long as it is still working, it seems like it’s in perfectly fine condition. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case. Often, the signs of an outdated electrical system are subtle. Most of your wiring is unseen, so you can’t easily form a visual inspection. However, there are a few common ways to tell that your electrical system is in need of modernization. Below, you can find some examples of the signs that tell you it is time to update your wiring and electrical components.

  • An old home wiring update can be a complex project if all the wiring needs to be replaced. However, we can often perform the necessary safety updates without replacing every single wire, but it will ultimately depend upon the situation. Some types of wiring used in the past are well-known safety hazards. For instance, aluminum wiring from the 1960s and 1970s is considered unsafe and unusable based on modern standards. Even worse is the non-metallic wiring used in the 1940s and 1950s. These kinds of wires should be replaced as soon as possible.

Your Home Still Has Two-Pronged Outlets

Most homes with two-pronged outlets have outdated wiring. This might not seem like a big deal to those of us who grew up around these outlets, but they are unsafe. Two-pronged outlets are not grounded, so excess electricity has no escape route. These outlets cause electrocution at a much higher rate than three-pronged outlets. Three-pronged outlets have been an industry standard since the mid-to-late 1960s. So, if you have two-pronged outlets, your home’s electrical system probably hasn’t been updated in over 50 years.

Your Home Doesn’t have GFCIs

GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupting) outlets are a crucial safety feature for any area that commonly comes into contact with water. If you do not have GFCI outlets in these areas, you can assume that your electrical system hasn’t been updated in a while. You should find GFCI outlets in your kitchen, bathrooms, garages, crawl spaces, and laundry rooms. This has been required by the National Electrical Code for many years.

Your Home Doesn’t Have AFCIs

AFCI (arc-fault circuit interrupting) outlets protect your home from potential electrical fires. When the conductive metal within your wires becomes exposed, electricity may jump out of it, causing an arc. This is a very common cause of electrical fires in the home. Additionally, AFCI outlets are required in most spaces for new homes. So, if you don’t have AFCI outlets in your house, you should have your electrical system inspected as soon as possible.

  • Are you constantly resetting the breakers in your electrical panel? If so, your electrical panel may be old. In the past, it was common for electrical panels to provide 60-amp service, but this isn’t enough for the average home anymore. This means that constantly tripping breakers might be a hint that your entire electrical panel is outdated. We can upgrade your electrical panel to 100- or 200-amp service, making your home safer and more efficient.
