Tankless Water Heater Electrical Circuit Services

For homeowners looking for ways to save energy and reduce their utility bills, a tankless water heater installation is a wonderful option. The U.S. Department of Energy says these on-demand water heaters are between eight and 50 percent more efficient than traditional storage tank models.

  • Open the door to your home’s electrical panel. Find the switches labeled “water heater.” If all the circuit breakers are on, they will all be aligned. Move the water heater switch into the opposite position to turn it off.

  • Usually a 30 to 50 amp dedicated circuit managed by multiple circuit breakers. Consult the product manual or manufacturer’s website for guidance for your tankless water heater’s circuit breaker requirements.

  • Gas water heater models use little to no electricity. The only time a dedicated circuit is required for a gas tankless water heater is if the manufacturer requires it.

Electric & Gas Tankless Water Heaters

  • Electric tankless water heaters use electric heating elements to quickly bring water up to temperature. Most electric models require 120 amps to operate. For some homes, this could require an electrical system upgrade. And because of the high electrical draw, these types of units need multiple circuit breakers in a home’s electrical panel. Always contact a licensed electrician for panel upgrades or installing a dedicated circuit for a tankless water heater.
Gas tankless water heaters use a burner powered by natural gas or propane to heat water. Combustion of gas inside the home means a vent must be installed to direct exhaust outside the house. Gas models usually produce more hot water per minute than electric ones. Most gas tankless water heaters require a 120-volt connection; some models can be plugged into a regular grounded outlet while others are hardwired to a service panel. Always have a licensed electrician perform hardwiring for major appliances.
