Also, the older the pump is, the more likely it’s shorting out. Old circuit breakers can eventually go bad, too. Electrical service for a pool can be confusing. If you have a gas pool heater, it can share the same dedicated circuit with the pump. If it’s an electric heater, it should be on a separate circuit from the pool pump. Additional equipment—beyond just a pump—will increase your circuit needs. These are the most common add-ons that can make the electrical installation process more complicated:

• If you’re lucky enough to have a pool heater, it’s important to know what kind you have.
• A gas pool heater can share the same dedicated circuit as the pool pump.
• An electric pool heater (or heat pump) will need its own dedicated 240-volt, 50-amp circuit, separate from the pool pump.
• Installing a hot tub with your pool? That will also require its own 240-volt, 50-amp dedicated circuit separate from the pool equipment.
• Accessories like automatic pool covers and lights can be wired into the same dedicated circuit as the pool pump.
• Small salt chlorine generators for saltwater pools can be plugged into a standard GFCI outlet. Larger systems will be wired into the same circuit as the pool pump.
