  • You might be wondering what an electrical code update is. A committee of electricians and other safety professionals create The National Electrical Code (NEC). The NEC is a set of safety standards that govern proper electrical installation, design, inspection, and repair. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Updates the NEC every three years. So, it’s important to ensure you have an inspection every few years to ensure your home has the most current electrical code updates and corrections.

  • As long as your electrical system is working properly, you may not think about updating it. This can be a hazardous mindset. Outdated outlets, circuit breakers, and wiring can pose a danger. Sometimes, that danger isn’t obvious to a homeowner until a disaster occurs. Keeping your home up to date with the most recent version of The National Electrical Code is the most reliable way to avoid fires, electric shock, and other preventable electrical dangers. Mr. Electric of The Coastal Empire makes it easy to get the electrical code corrections you need.

  • There are many benefits of having your electrical system inspected by our team of licensed electricians. The most apparent advantage is the reduced risk of injury or home fire. On top of that, there are many other things that we can help you with during an electrical code update inspection, such as:

    • Ensuring your home meets the latest standards for electrical wiring, equipment, installation practices, and more
    • Inspecting a home you are interested in buying to ensure it doesn’t need expensive electrical updates
    • Preventing delays involved in selling your home
    • Protecting your home and your loved ones from injury, property damage, and possible liability issues

The 10 Parts of the 2020 Electrical Code You Should Know

The National Electrical Code is a massive document with thousands of pages. So, it’s virtually impossible for the average person to read through it and find the most important pieces of information for them. That’s why Mr. Electric of The Coastal Empire does it for you. Our licensed electricians always study the latest updates to the NEC. We’ve compiled 10 of the most important updates in recent years for you, such as:

  1. Exterior emergency power disconnect switches must be installed at all new one- and two-family dwellings. This measure is intended to make safer working conditions for emergency responders.
  2. Service disconnect rules concerning de-energizing panel boards have been altered to improve electrical worker safety.
  3. Load calculation tables have been revised to reflect modern improvements in energy efficiency. The change is largely due to the widespread use of LED lighting, which is significantly more energy-efficient than traditional bulbs.
  4. A new general requirement has been instituted to cover cables exposed on ceilings and walls.
  5. Requirements for GFCI protection have expanded to include all 125- and 250-volt receptacles supplied by a single-phase circuit of 150 volts or less to ground.
  6. All basement receptacles must also have GFCI protection, regardless of whether the basement is finished.
  7. A new section has been added governing modern Ethernet cables that simultaneously transmit data and electrical power.
  8. Requirements for solar-generated energy storage continue to be revised to keep pace with evolving home energy storage technologies, such as the Tesla Powerwall home battery.
  9. Surge protection requirements have been enhanced to protect sensitive safety equipment, such as hard-wired smoke alarms.
  10. A new item in the code governs how homeowners may transfer power from electric vehicle (EV) batteries to residential wiring.
  • When was the last time your home’s electrical system was updated according to the standards of The National Electrical Code? If it has been more than three years, your home may not meet the most current safety standards. Mr. Electric of The Coastal Empire offers electrical code updates in Savannah and the surrounding areas. We will inspect your home, give you an itemized list of the necessary updates, and explain the electrical code update costs ahead of time.
