Patio Lighting Ideas

Patio lighting above and around group of people dining.

Are you dreaming of an inviting outdoor living space that’s perfect for entertaining, dining, and relaxing? You can create that beautiful patio more easily than you think. Just break it up into steps! The first step is the foundation; if you have a patio surface already, give it a good wash. If you still need to lay that foundation, consider building a wood deck or installing pavers.

The next step is determining what you want to use the patio space for. This will help you decide what furnishings and fixtures are necessary. Maybe an outdoor dining set and a nice umbrella will do the trick. Perhaps a hot tub would be a good addition? Don’t forget to designate a spot for the grill!

Options for Lighting a Patio

Once you have a patio layout in mind, it’s time to choose the best outdoor lights for your patio. A good lighting scheme will mean that the party doesn’t have to stop just because the sun goes down. There are numerous types of patio light fixture options to keep the area safe and illuminated into the night.

Need some suggestions? Here are some patio lighting ideas to help you plan.

Ceiling Fan with Lights

If there is an overhang covering part of the patio, a ceiling fan is a must. On those warm summer days and nights, you will be grateful for the constant breeze. And if you’re installing a new fan, it’s a good idea to choose a model with lights attached. If you can position the fan over a dining table or seating area, the lights will provide the illumination necessary for that space.

Wall Sconces

For patios that begin right outside the back door, consider installing wall sconces on the house’s exterior. These lights will provide some general lighting while helping define the patio’s perimeter. There are numerous styles of outdoor wall sconces to choose from. We’re big fans of glass enclosure lanterns with vintage-looking Edison bulbs, but choose the fixtures that best complement your patio.

Outdoor String Lights

String lights are popular additions for outdoor living spaces. Draping a few strands across the patio will add light with casual style. Make sure you choose string lights that are approved for outdoor use. String lights are made either for indoor use only, or indoor/outdoor use. So, look for “Indoor/Outdoor” on the box. We strongly recommend LED string lights. They’re much more efficient and longer lasting than incandescent string lights.

Don’t know how to hang patio lights? Make even marks along the walls or surfaces you want to attach the light strands to, and secure the string lights using eyelet screws.

Patio Step Lights

If your patio features steps, we urge you to consider installing patio step lights. This simple addition will illuminate stairs, keeping your family and guests safe during the evening hours. Hardwired systems are the most reliable option. There are solar models available, but you should only expect them to last a couple of years.
