Electrician Fort Myers, FL

Fort Myers homes that need electrical attention will present the following signs:

• Flickering lights
• Tripped circuit breakers
• Scorch marks
• Burning odors
• Warm or hot outlets and switches

Plan on one to two days total once the generator and transfer switch are on site, though homes with dated panels sometimes need extra time for compatible wiring. The City of Fort Myers and Lee County both require a permit and final inspection before FPL will reconnect service, so scheduling accounts for that step and not just the physical hookup. During Hurricane Ian, FPL reported roughly 67,000 Lee County accounts without power at the peak of restoration, a reminder that outages here can stretch well past a day or two. Homes built before the mid-2000s in neighborhoods like McGregor and the College Parkway corridor often need a load calculation before sizing the unit, since older 100-amp services weren't built with a generator or a modern AC system in mind. Book early. Fall permit offices get backed up once storm season starts.

Lee County and the City of Fort Myers both require an electrical permit and a final inspection for any panel replacement or upgrade, whether you're swapping a 100-amp panel for 200-amp service or just replacing breakers inside the existing box. Florida's current building code ties electrical work to the 2020 National Electrical Code, and inspectors check grounding, bonding, and breaker compatibility before signing off. Skipping the permit isn't just a paperwork risk. It can complicate an insurance claim down the road if a fire investigator later traces damage back to unpermitted work. In older Fort Myers neighborhoods with homes from the 1970s and 80s, we often find panels from manufacturers long since recalled or out of business, making replacement parts nearly impossible to source and, in some cases, unsafe to repair or upgrade. If your panel predates 1990, budget for a full swap rather than a patch job.

Southwest Florida's humidity and salt air are hard on outdoor electrical components, and a GFCI outlet that trips repeatedly during our wet summer months is often reacting to moisture intrusion rather than a wiring fault. Corroded contacts, a cracked in-use cover, or condensation inside the box can all trip the sensor even when nothing is actually unsafe. The National Fire Protection Association traces tens of thousands of home electrical fires each year back to failed wiring and devices, with equipment exposed to water or high moisture among the most common failure points. On homes near the Caloosahatchee River or within a mile or two of the coast, we see weather-resistant GFCI outlets and covers degrade faster than the standard ten-year lifespan the manufacturers quote, sometimes in half that time. If yours trips more than once a month, have the outlet and box inspected instead of just resetting it and moving on.

It can, depending on your panel's age and what else is already drawing power, which is why a load calculation comes before any Level 2 charger install. A typical 240-volt home charger pulls 30 to 50 amps, and older Fort Myers homes with 100-amp service built before central air conditioning became standard often don't have that headroom left once the air handler, pool pump, and water heater are factored in. We size the charger to the panel, not the other way around, and in plenty of cases that means recommending a panel upgrade to 200-amp service alongside the charger install. Lee County still requires a standard electrical permit and final inspection for the new circuit. Permitting doesn't go away just because the equipment is new. Plan the panel work first if your home was built before 2000.

Hurricane season in Southwest Florida runs June through November, and the pre-storm checklist worth running every spring includes testing your generator's transfer switch, checking your main panel and meter can for corrosion, and confirming your surge protection is rated for the whole house rather than just a single outlet strip. During Hurricane Ian, FPL reported more than 67,000 Lee County accounts without power at one point in the restoration effort, and many of the callbacks we got afterward were for surge damage to AC compressors and pool equipment rather than storm-blown wiring. A whole-home surge protective device installed at the panel handles that risk for the entire property in one step. If you're on well water or have a sump pump, it's a good idea to confirm they're on a working outlet or a generator-fed circuit too, since flooding problems compound fast once the pump stops running. Do this in April or May, not the week a storm is already in the forecast.
