What is a Transformer?

A transformer is an electrical device that increases or decreases the voltage and current being dispersed. A transformer is used to increase or decrease the current transferred so that it can operate at the appropriate voltage safely and efficiently.

When you think of a transformer, you probably think of the canister-shaped device that sits on the side of power poles. If you’re in an area with frequent lightning storms, you may even think of it as the thing that explodes when lightning strikes power lines. But those aren’t the only types of transformers that exist. There are also box-shaped transformers and privately owned commercial transformers that help regulate the power that goes into an office building.

Types of Commercial Transformers

Liquid-Filled Transformers

These are used in a wide variety of industrial and commercial locations. The type of fluid differs based on whether they are installed indoors or outdoors. They are filled with mineral oil when used outdoors and high fire point fluids when used indoors.

Dry-Type Transformers

These transformers offer a wide range of industrial functions. Dry-type transformers can be installed in close proximity to the electrical load, so expensive cable runs are not necessary. This type of transformer has low operating and maintenance costs, making it a cost effective option.

Cast Coil Transformers

These transformers have a high dielectric strength and can handle overvoltages, electrical stress and thermal stress well. They generally have a long life and require little maintenance. Due to the cast coil windings, moisture and airborne contaminants do not affect the transformer. These transformers are ideal for food and beverage production, pharmaceutical production, automotive production, medical production, and pulp and paper production facilities.

Step-up & Step-down Transformers

These transformers either increase or decrease the amount of voltage transferred. They are often smaller and can be used to adjust the voltage for devices that require a specific energy input.

Pad Mounted Transformers

These transformers can be used for underground power distribution systems. Pad mounted transformers are fairly flexible because of their contemporary design and comparatively low profile. In addition, you don’t have to place a protective barrier around these units because of their insulated construction. These transformers are good for places like schools, offices, restaurants, or retail spaces.

Isolation Transformers

This type of transformer allows two appliances to be connected without power being directly fed from one device to the other. These types of transformers are usually employed in situations where it is safer to isolate a piece of equipment from the source of power.

Toroidal Transformers

These transformers are unique because they transfer electricity from one circuit to another without changing the frequency. Toroidal transformers use electromagnetic induction to reduce losses, physical size, and weight of switch-mode power supplies. Their circular design minimizes the length of wire needed and helps to prevent electromagnetic interference.

Custom Transformers

Buck Boost Transformers
