Electrical Safety Tips to Avoid Electrocution

Are you concerned about the electrical safety of yourself and your loved ones? Electrocutions are responsible for more than 4,000 injuries and 300 deaths per year, so it makes sense for parents and homeowners to be concerned about electrical hazards. At Mr. Electric of Atlanta, we provide commercial and residential services in Atlanta, Suwanee, Sandy Springs, Roswell, Buckhead, Alpharetta, Georgia, and other local communities. We work hard to ensure that local property owners have homes and buildings that are safe from electrical fires and electrocutions, and we want to help you avoid personal injury as well. Here are some tips for how you can avoid electrical hazards in your household.

Use Tamper Resistant Outlets

If you live in a home with children, it’s important to take precautions by replacing all standard electrical outlet covers with tamper-resistant models. They are available in a wide variety and are a relatively affordable way to keep curious little ones safe from harm.

Install GFCI Circuits

Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter or GFCI outlets are automatically installed where appropriate in newly built homes. However, older houses, previously owned homes, and rental units may not have them. Check for these outlets in your bathrooms, kitchen, laundry room, basement, and any other area where contact with water or excessive moisture is a possibility. They should be easily recognized by the two distinctive switches on the front plate. If your home still has conventional outlets in places where water is present, you need to install them as soon as possible.

Be Cautious During Home Construction and Demolition Projects

Many people enter into major renovation projects without much thought to their wiring systems. Any demolition or remodeling tasks that require cutting into walls, flooring, or other “hidden” areas of the property, you’re likely to run into wiring. Cutting through the electrical system with power tools is a surefire way to get hurt. Consult your home blueprints, or call a professional electrician in Atlanta or your area to get professional advice before you begin.

Always Use Insulated Tools

If you do need to work around electricity, always use insulated tools. If your hand is touching metal tools that connect to the electrical current, you will likely suffer injury. Don’t work with electricity if you haven’t had proper training and experience and proper tools.

Call a Professional

If you have a home project that involves electrical work, it’s always best to call someone with professional certification. You’ll have your tasks completed faster, and have the reassurance of safety and security for those you love the most.
