What Are the Types of EV Chargers?
When you start looking into a home EV charger, you will notice three different types. The main difference between each charger is the rate at which it can charge your vehicle. The three main types of EV chargers include:
- Level 1 Chargers – The most basic charger is a Level 1 Charger, which will come standard with nearly any electric vehicle. These chargers can be plugged directly into your home’s three-pronged outlet. The charge speed is considered fairly slow, taking up to 20 hours or more to fully charge a battery.
- Level 2 Chargers – Level 2 Chargers are the fastest chargers available for your home. Some EVs will come with a Level 2 Charger, but some require owners to purchase one. These require a licensed electrician to install a dedicated 240-volt circuit. However, they can completely recharge most EVs in just three hours.
- Level 3 Chargers – If you have seen public charging stations at grocery stores or other commercial properties, these are Level 3 Chargers. They can add up to 160 miles of range to an EV battery in a half hour. However, they require more power than a residential property can provide. Mr. Electric of Chapel Hill installs Level 3 Charger sat commercial and industrial buildings.
