Should You Get An Electric Fireplace

Want an electric fireplace? There are options. Which is right for you, the electric fireplace TV stand, or the wall-mount electric fireplace? Learn more.

The hearth is the heart of the home, but not every home has a hearth. This is where the electric fireplace comes in, providing the cozy comfort of a fireplace without requiring, you know, chimney installation. Still, they’re not for everyone.

The Pros of Electric Fireplaces

For homeowners who would like to avoid the maintenance required of a real, wood-burning fireplace, an electric fireplace can be a cozy addition to nearly any room. Since electric fireplaces don’t burn wood or use gas, installation is simple and their size can range from that of a hanging LED TV to a full unit that looks like a full fireplace installation, mantle and all. For many homeowners, and perhaps especially for condo owners and apartment dwellers, electric fireplaces are worth owning, but there are some negatives.

The Cons of Electric Fireplaces

Those looking for their fireplace to heat their homes in the dark of winter will be disappointed. Electric fireplaces don’t give off enough heat to warm a room, especially not a larger living room. If you’re looking for a way to keep a large space warm, an e-fireplace won’t always do the job.

Additionally, unlike a wood-burning fireplace, an electric fireplace won’t heat your home in the instance of a power outage.

The aesthetics of an electric fireplace might leave something to be desired as well. The faux flames will be acceptable for some, but possibly not to purists. The good news is that advances in recent years have made the flames look more convincing, but still, some e-fireplaces are better than others. Definitely do your research.

Is an Electric Fireplace Right for You?

First, shop around online, and then go to see one for yourself at a showroom if you can. Determine what size you want, where your electric fireplace would go in your home, and ask what you want from it. Aesthetics? Heat? Both?

Are Electric Fireplaces Safe?

Most electric fireplaces are relatively easy to install and only require a simple plug in order to start working. And as far as safety, most electric fireplaces shut off automatically if they tip over or fall. Additionally, the power supplied to an electric fireplace is generally capped to the same heating standards as electric space heaters, which are safe for all standard household wall sockets, wiring, and fuse boxes (don’t forget to schedule an electrical home inspection). Like most space heaters, make sure it’s unplugged when not in use and let it cool down after you’ve finished enjoying the ambiance.

For those looking for the welcoming sight of a few burning logs, an electric fireplace can do the trick, and in just about any room in the house. The simple “plug and play” nature of electric fireplaces is enticing to be sure, and this alone makes it worth it to some.
