Not long ago, CFL (compact fluorescent light) bulbs were considered a great revolution in home and business lighting technology. But now, with many swapping their CFLs for LEDs (light-emitting diode), it’s important that old CFL bulbs, which contain mercury – a hazardous, toxic metal – are disposed of properly.
We all need to do our part to protect the environment and public health. Keep reading for some tips from your friends at Mr. Electric® for how to dispose of your old CFL bulbs properly and responsibly.
Where to Recycle CFL Bulbs
CFLs really don’t belong in the regular trash, but not just any old recycling bin will do either. Here are a few tips to help you find local recycling services or facilities that will take your old CFL bulbs and dispose of them in an eco-friendly fashion.
Local Garbage Pickup Service
Sometimes, the best way to dispose of your old CFL bulbs is through the curbside service you already have. Give your garbage/recycling service provider a call to see if they offer CFL or mercury pickup and recycling services. Some service providers require customers to drop off hazardous materials at their facility instead.
Many stores that sell or used to sell CFLs now offer a recycling program for those bulbs. Your local hardware or home improvement store may have a dropbox near their entrance. If you don’t see one, ask if they take in CFLs for responsible recycling.
If your town or city offers a municipal recycling program, check to see if they accept CFLs. If your local program does not, check websites such as RecycleABulb.com and Earth911.com, which are great resources to help you find places where you can responsibly recycle your old CFL light bulbs locally.
