What Is an EVSE Charger?
EVSE (Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment) chargers allow electric vehicles to be charged by providing electrical power to the vehicle's batteries. They come in different types, from basic Level 1 chargers that can be plugged into a regular household outlet to more advanced Level 2 and Level 3 chargers that require professional installation and can charge a vehicle much faster. The different types of charger for EVs available include:
- Level 1 Charger – This is the most straightforward charging device that comes with most EVs and can be plugged into a regular three-prong outlet. It charges the batteries slowly, taking more than 20 hours to fully charge an EV battery.
- Level 2 Charger – A more sophisticated EV charger that needs a dedicated 240-volt circuit and professional installation in a garage. It charges an EV faster than the basic charger, taking around three hours to charge the battery fully.
- Level 3 Charger – This charger is the most potent EV charging device commonly found at public charging stations. It can add up to 160 miles of driving range to an EV's batteries in about 30 minutes. With an industrial-level power draw, it's not suitable for most EV owners to have at home, but it can be installed in an industrial building if required.
