  • A ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) is a device intended to protect people from electrical shock hazards. It shuts off power during a ground fault, protecting people and their families against electrical shock, fires, and overheating.

  • The installation of GFCIs has been required in residential homes since 1971. They were initially mandated for use with swimming pool equipment and the exterior area surrounding swimming pools. Today, there are many other areas where GFCI outlets are required, including moisture-prone spaces like bathrooms and laundry rooms. GFCI outlets have been required in:

    • Spa and pool areas since 1971
    • Your home’s exterior since 1973
    • Bathrooms since 1975
    • Garages since 1978
    • Kitchen countertops since 1987
    • Crawlspaces and unfinished basements since 1990
    • Wet bars since 1993
    • Laundry and utility sinks since 2005

Testing Your GFCI Outlet Performance

GFCI outlets should be tested every month to ensure they're working correctly. Thankfully, testing these outlets is easy. Here's how you can do it:

  1. Press the “test” button to stop the electrical flow to the outlet.
  2. Plug in a small device that uses minimal electricity to ensure that electrical current no longer flows to the receptacle.
  3. Press the "reset" button to return the flow of power to the outlet.

If your GFCI outlet won't reset or keeps tripping, you should stop using it and call Mr. Electric of Central Michigan. The outlet could be faulty, or there could be other issues with the circuit.

  • Arc fault circuit interrupters (AFCIs) were originally used in properties where wiring was considered unsafe. They were designed to protect against fire. In 1999, they became mandatory for all homes. GFCIs offer fire protection and minimize the risk of electrical shocks. Some rooms are required to have dual-functioning AFCI/GFCI receptacles for maximum protection.
