Why does my power flicker or cut out during storms in Wildwood?

The most frequent cause of power issues during storms in Wildwood is trees. Wildwood's dense canopy hangs over miles of overhead lines, and wind or ice drops limbs onto them. Ameren Missouri lists fallen trees and branches among the primary causes of outages. The service drop, the line from the pole to your house, is yours to keep clear. Flicker on calm days is a different problem. Lights dimming when the AC kicks on often points to a loose neutral or corroded meter base, and we track those down before they cook your electronics.

Do I need a permit for electrical work in Wildwood, MO?

You'll need a permit for pretty much any job where new wiring goes in, or circuits change. Wildwood contracts with St. Louis County Public Works for code enforcement, so the county issues your electrical permit and sends the inspector. City Hall doesn't. County rules require a licensed electrical contractor or a qualifying property owner to do the work. A new detached garage or pool house often needs a separate zoning authorization from the Wildwood Planning Department, too. We pull the permit and book the county inspection for you. Keep the final inspection record with your closing papers. You'll want proof of permitted work when you sell.

How do I run a generator safely if my Wildwood home is on a well?

Connect the generator through a transfer switch or panel interlock, never a cord plugged into a dryer outlet. Parts of rural Wildwood rely on private wells, so an outage shuts off your water along with your lights. Most submersible well pumps run on 240 volts and draw two to three times their running load at startup. Your generator needs headroom for the surge. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advises placing portable generator exhaust at least 20 feet from your home. Before we size a unit, we read your pump's nameplate. Guessing leads to tripped breakers mid-storm.

Is whole-home surge protection worth the cost in Wildwood?

Whole-home surge protection is definitely worth it, especially on wooded, hilltop lots with long overhead service runs. A surge protective device (SPD) mounts at your panel and clamps spikes before they reach your furnace board or well pump controller. Recent editions of the National Electrical Code require one whenever a home's service equipment gets replaced. Nationally, the Insurance Information Institute reports insurers paid an average of $18,641 per lightning claim in 2024. Spring storms rolling in from the west reach Wildwood before most of St. Louis County. After a big storm, check the indicator light on your SPD. Dark means replace it.

What electrical updates does a 1990s home in Wildwood need?

Smoke alarms and panel capacity top the list. U.S. Census Bureau survey data puts the median build year for Wildwood homes around 1992, so many original parts are now past 30 years old. The National Fire Protection Association says to replace smoke alarms every 10 years. Homes from this era also predate arc-fault breaker rules for bedrooms. A 150-amp panel strains once you add an EV charger or hot tub. Own a home in Winding Trails, Clayton Pointe, or another established subdivision with its original panel? Ask us for a load calculation before you add anything big.
