Checklist for New Homeowners to Inspect Outlets & Breakers

Checklist for New Homeowners to Inspect Outlets & Breakers

Have you recently purchased or inherited an older, previously owned home? Buying used properties is on the rise due to low inventory and historically high housing prices. While this is a great way to get a good deal, it's vital that you take care of your new investment by ensuring that its electrical system is safe and up to date. While significant issues may have been inspected by local code enforcement, some things may have been overlooked, like problems with your electrical outlets. At Mr. Electric of Atlanta, we offer premium commercial and residential electrical services, including electric outlet replacement, outlet repair services, wiring upgrades, and professional inspections. Are you concerned about your new property's electrical outlets? Here is a list of the components that electricians will check during a routine electrical inspection.

Interior Outlets

The interior outlets and light switches should all be inspected and testing routinely. Loose outlet covers should also be changed out as needed. If there are signs of trouble, like discoloration from smoke, or heat emerging from the wall near it, you may be at risk of fire damage. This kind of issue should be addressed by a professional right away. This is also an excellent time to consider investing in additional outlets or dedicated circuits if you need more areas to plug in your devices and appliances.

Outdoor Outlets

If you enjoy entertaining in your backyard, make sure you are prepared with enough quality outdoor outlets. Damaged outlets could put your electrical system and your loved ones in danger. Make sure your existing outlets are adequately defended against the elements. Never use extension cords for powering outdoor electronics from inside your home. Not only is this a tripping hazard, but it could also cause electrical shock if it starts to rain or snow.

GFCI Outlets

GFCI or Ground Fault Circuit Interruptor outlets are very important for safety. They protect against electrocution and power surges in areas where there is a high level of moisture. Bathrooms, laundry rooms, utility closets, basements, garages, kitchens, and other spaces where water is present should all have GFCI outlets in place. An affordable electrician can upgrade your outlets to GFCIs if necessary.

Electrical Wiring

Electricians can also check for signs of outdated wiring materials or damage. Older houses are at risk of having aluminum wiring, knob-and-tube wiring, and other issues that could put your property at risk. If your home was constructed before 1973, then there is a greater likelihood that these items might still be in place within your electrical system. Also, newer houses could have also suffered from wiring exposure and damage from pest control problems or wear and tear. Our team can inspect your wiring and electric panel for warning signs and fix the issue so you can enjoy a safe and efficient electrical system.
