What Is an EVSE Charger?
EV car chargers are devices designed to supply electrical power to electric vehicles for charging their batteries. These types of EV chargers range from Level 1 chargers, which can be connected to a standard household outlet, to more sophisticated Level 2 and Level 3 chargers that necessitate professional installation and offer significantly faster charging capabilities.
- Level 1 Charger - This basic charging device is typically included with most electric vehicles. It can be connected to a standard three-prong outlet, allowing for convenient charging. However, it charges the vehicle's batteries slower, taking more than 20 hours to fully charge.
- Level 2 Charger - A more advanced EV charger that requires professional installation and a dedicated 240-volt circuit, typically installed in a garage or similar location. This charger provides faster charging than the Level 1 charger, taking approximately three hours to fully charge the EV's battery.
- Level 3 Charger - Also known as a DC fast charger or rapid charger, this type of charger is commonly found at public charging stations. It offers the fastest charging speed and can add up to 160 miles of driving range to an electric vehicle's batteries in 30 minutes. Due to its high power draw, Level 3 chargers are not typically suitable for residential installations but are commonly used in industrial or commercial settings.
