  • Having breakers tripping constantly is a big indication of an underlying electrical problem. This may be caused by loose connections or an overloaded circuit, these tripping breakers need to be troubleshot and fixed ASAP. The breakers could also be old and malfunctioning and passed their estimated years of service and just need replacement. If you own a home older than 30 years old, as at lot of homes in the Huntsville area are, your breakers may be at the end of their life and could be part of the problem you are facing, this can be a quick and easy fix. Troubleshooting breakers not working is something that needs to be done differently for each situation. If you are constantly having breakers that trip, book a visit and let us help find and fix your issue. Some of the ways our technicians troubleshoot this are:

    • Opening your breaker panel and inspecting it for any obvious issues
    • Turn the breaker off and then disconnect the wire from the breaker to see if the breaker holds with no load on it, if it doesn’t hold
    • Replace the breaker to see if the constant tripping still occurs
    • Use a clamp on amp meter that measures the amp draw of the trouble circuit
    • Find the middle of the troubled circuit and split the load to see if the trouble is in the front half or the back half of the circuit
    • If the breaker is still tripping the circuit breaker is likely not the issue and the problem is further down the line in the circuitry.
  • Many Huntsville homeowners face the dangerous issue of outlets in their homes that are not working. This is one of the most common electrical problems for someone to face. The cause could be something as simple as a backstabbed outlet with loose connectionscausing arcing and sparking, which can lead to outlets burning and melting and is the leading cause of electrical house fires. Though this appears to be a small problem it can be an indication of something much bigger going on that could be a great danger to your home. One damaged outlet can lead to others in that series to fail, lights flickering or not turning on, and even breakers tripping. The following would be how we would troubleshoot this issue.

    1. Verify with our multimeter that there is power leaving the breaker panel for that circuit
    2. Once power leaving breaker has been confirmed turn off the breaker for that circuit before opening any outlets and switches
    3. Opening outlets and switches starting with the first failed one of that circuit
    4. Using a multimeter check power at the outlets to determine if the voltage is correct
    5. Test the continuity of the wire between the first working outlet and nearest non-working outlet

GFCI Will Not Reset

All homes built around and after 1980 are required to have GFCI protection in the bathrooms and became required in the kitchen later. These are designed for your safety near wet locations. These are designed to trip and turn off if there is an imbalance in the electrical flow. If your GFCI will not reset this could be due to several issues. You could have a GFCI that has gone bad, or it could be a faulty appliance plugged into this receptacle causing it to not reset or to trip constantly after resetting. There are several ways to troubleshoot a GFCI outlet that is not working. This is how our technicians troubleshoot

  • Unplug everything plugged into the GFCI and attempt to reset it
  • Open all outlets that are protected by this GFCI receptacle to make sure nothing in the wiring is causing this tripping
  • Replace the GFCI to see if it is just a faulty GFCI or if even further investigation is needed
  • Change all GFCI protected duplex outlets to be all GFCI outlets at each location so if one trips you will know where the problem is

  • If you are experiencing a problem with your ceiling fan not working it could be several different issues. You could have something as simple as a light switch not sending good steady power to your fan, or a fan that has internal problems that are not allowing it to function as intended. You also may experience problems with the fan that do not affect the fans’ ability to work but the light on the fan may not function properly. Fans have a lot of their own components that can malfunction and cause issues. Some fans are easily repairable and can be fixed to last you many more years, however some fans are not as easily repaired and often its best to just replace the entire fan. The electrician may trouble shoot your fan by:

    • Checking power leaving the switch and the power at the fan junction box.
    • Checking the connections of the fan junction box
    • Verifying that the light kit on the fan is not having issues
    • Make sure the internal switches for pull cords or fan remote and receiver are functioning as intended
