Types of EV Chargers
Are all EV chargers the same? No! Three types of EV chargers are available: level one, level two, and level three. Each level charges faster and more efficiently than the one before it but requires more energy or power to function. The types of EV chargers are as follows:
Level One EV Chargers
Level one EV chargers are sometimes called portable EV chargers. These plug into a standard 120-volt wall outlet. They sometimes are provided along with the electric or hybrid vehicle you purchase. They don't require installation; you plug it into the wall when needed. They are the least efficient of all home EV chargers, taking around 10 hours to fully charge the car's battery. They are also the least expensive option.
Level Two EV Chargers
Level two EV chargers are the most popular type of home EV charger. They take around four to five hours to fully charge the battery. They require professional EV charger installation services, as they typically mandate upgrades to your home’s electrical system. You may need a dedicated circuit installation or a dedicated outlet.
Level Three EV Chargers
A level three EV charger is the fastest and most efficient. They take 30-60 minutes to charge the battery, but they are prohibitively expensive for most consumers. You can typically find them at highway rest stops, service stations, or other public areas. They require an extreme amount of energy and are not recommended for daily use as they can degrade the vehicle’s battery.
