Signs of Bad Electrical Wiring in a House

Signs of Bad Electrical Wiring in a House.

We all know that electricity is an incredibly volatile element that can cause electrocutions, electrical fires, and even death. Fortunately, electricity runs through wires safely tucked in conduits in the walls and ceilings. The bad news, however, is that these wires can become damaged. Worse, they may be improperly installed. The average Joe probably cannot detect signs of bad electrical wiring, but Mr. Electric of Atlanta is here to help with some tips. If you prefer to leave the electrical work to experienced electricians, then feel free to call Mr. Electric of Atlanta and request an urgent dispatch or schedule a flexible appointment.

What Is "Bad" Electrical Wiring?

Bad, or faulty, wiring is used to describe electrical wiring that is in a couple of different conditions. Either the wiring is physically damaged, or the wiring was improperly installed. These can be due to accidental damage, wear and tear, rodent attacks, or an electrician cutting corners on safety. In any case, it is important to inspect your wires, or have them inspected, once every year or two. Mr. Electric of Atlanta does provide professional electrical inspections in the Atlanta area.

Some Signs of Bad Electrical Wiring in Your Home

If your home is over 40 years old, then the likelihood of your wiring being bad is high. For greater clarity, here are five tell-tale signs that your electrical wiring needs to be addressed:

  • Flickering Lights: Do your lights flicker or dim when you plug in an appliance or device? This sign is often accompanied by light switches that buzz when you turn them on. These are red flags.
  • Frequently Tripping Circuit Breakers: Circuit breakers are meant to trip "off" when there is unusual electrical activity in a circuit. This is why they exist. However, if the circuit breakers are frequently tripping, then there is a problem. First, try reducing the number of devices connected to the circuit. If this does not help, then it is time to have your circuit breaker and wires inspected.
  • Hot Electrical Outlets: Faulty wiring often sends too much electricity to outlets. Hot, darkened, or smoky outlets are major red flags. Unplug everything from the affected outlets and have a licensed electrician inspect the wiring as soon as possible!
  • Frayed or Chewed Wiring: This one should be obvious but is worth noting. When the protective plastic of the wiring is broken, the wires become exposed and allow electricity to arc. This arc discharge can cause dangerous electrical shocks and even fires.
