Selling Your Home? How to Know if Your Electrical System is Up to Code

Do you live in a historic home or been living in your current house for over a decade? Then there could be a chance your electrical system isn't up to date. Whether you have plans for selling your property right away, or you're simply preparing for a future possibility, you'll want to make sure your electricity is up to code and ready for new buyers. At Mr. Electric of Atlanta, we provide premium commercial and residential services in Atlanta, Marietta, Dunwoody, Roswell, Sandy Springs, and all other metro area neighborhoods. Here are a few tips to help you ensure your home is safe and ready to place on the market.

Make Sure Your Home is Protected Against Electrical Fires

The first step is to make sure your home's fire protection is in order. You need to have a smoke detector installed at least 3 feet from all bedroom doors, as well as in the garage, attic, and basement. It's also helpful for homeowners with large properties to upgrade conventional detectors with smart, wireless models that network together. This will ensure that if a fire is detected in the basement or other far-away rooms, everyone in the house will know right away and can get to safety fast.

Update the Kitchen

Your kitchen probably has more electrical appliances and devices than any other room in the home. Therefore, it's vital that all the wiring and circuits are up to date and capable of powering a modern family. Check to ensure all outlets near the sink, refrigerator or other water source is fitted with a GFCI outlet. This will help prevent short circuits and electrocutions due to moisture contact. Also, large appliances such as microwaves will most likely need to have their own dedicated circuits.

Upgrade Your Bathrooms

Your bathroom will also need to be equipped with GFCI outlets, as this room is frequently steamy from hot showers and baths. Check to ensure you're you have #12-gauge wiring for your bathroom lights and you will also need to install a vent fan if your bathroom has no window.

Get Your Basement Ready

Whether your home's basement is fully finished or bare and largely neglected, you'll want to make sure it's up to standards. You'll also need to install GFCI outlets throughout the entire basement. Also, make sure you have a smoke detector with carbon monoxide and hazardous gas detection features. It's also a good idea to install a sump pump in case of flooding, this will not only protect your property from water damage but will increase the home's value when it's time to sell.

Install Lighting for Your Attic

Are you still carrying a flashlight every time you visit the attic? If you are using your attic to store boxes and containers, equipment, or a heating/cooling system, then you'll need to make sure you have adequate lighting. Place an LED light or other energy-efficient bulb anywhere there is an accumulation of stored items or equipment that might need servicing.

Get Help from a Certified Electrician in Your Area

The last step is to contact a certified electrician in your area. A well-trained electrician will be well aware of specific electrical codes and regulations in your city and state, as well as national standards. Are you looking for a licensed and insured electrician in the Atlanta, Georgia area? Then call the experts at Mr. Electric of Atlanta and get the help you need. Our experienced professionals will come to your home and conduct a thorough inspection. If any problems are detected, they will have the tools and equipment on hand to take care of any repairs or replacements, so you can have a safe and market-ready property as soon as possible.
