How to Change a Light Bulb

How to change a light bulb.

Has an important light fixture in your home or business suddenly gone dark? You could have an issue with the lighting system itself, or more than likely, the bulb has finally met its end. Before you toss out the fixture, you should always try and replace the bulb first to see if this is the source of your problem. However, some people are uncomfortable with the idea of changing a light bulb, since they are unfamiliar with handling electricity safely. At Mr. Electric of Atlanta, we provide high quality commercial and residential lighting installation services for clients in the metro Atlanta, Georgia area. We enjoy helping our clients get the most from their electrical system and we want to do the same for you. Do you need to switch out a bulb but are a little nervous? Here are some tips on how to do it safely.

Make Sure the Power to the Light Fixture is Off

The first rule when handling electricity is to ensure that the power is shut off. For safety purposes, it is recommended that property owners flip the breaker switch to the "off" position at the electrical panel in order to be certain to avoid risk of injury or fire.

Be Patient

Once the power has been shut off to the light switch, wait at least ten to fifteen minutes before you begin. Touching the glass bulb too soon could lead to burned fingers.

Carefully Remove the Existing Light Bulb

After it has cooled, you can carefully unscrew the bulb from its position. Plastic LED lights are often resistant to damage when dropped, but incandescent, CFL and Halogen lights can shatter. Be sure to dispose of the old bulb in the appropriate manner.

Find a Replacement Bulb

Next, you will need to have the right replacement bulb on hand. If you already have one stored away than congratulations for being prepared. If not, then you will need to place an order online for fast delivery or take a trip to the local hardware store. Make sure that the replacement bulb is the right wattage for your fixture. Using a bulb with the wrong specifications could lead to rapid burnout of the bulb or damage to your light fixture.

Unpackage New Bulb and Place It into the Socket

When you are ready to insert the new bulb, carefully unpackage the item and put the new unit safely into place. Avoid screwing the bulb in too tight or loosely.

Restore Electricity to the Light Fixture and Test

Finally, you can go to the electrical panel and restore power to your light switch. Test the bulb to make sure it is working.
