How to Avoid the Most Common Electrical Code Violations

How to avoid the most common electrical code violations.

Are you worried about the condition of your electrical wiring? At Mr. Electric of Atlanta, we provide a wide variety of premium commercial and residential electrical services including wiring upgrades and repairs in the Atlanta, Georgia area. If you have an older home, and are concerned about electrical code violations, then read below for the most common issues that property owners face, and what you can do to solve similar problems for your home or business.

Newer Light Fixtures Connected to Outdated Wiring

One common problem found in older homes is having modern fixtures connected to an outdated electrical system. While it may be tempting to replace that brassy chandelier from the 80s as soon as possible, it is important that you have updated wiring.

Wire Overcrowding

An often-cited violation is having too many wires crammed into a small space. One 7/8-inch hole cannot safely hold five wires. Overcrowding can cause the wires to rapidly deteriorate due to friction from being in close proximity. This is also frequently called "burned wires". These exposed conductors can leave your property vulnerable to fires if left undetected or ignored. The best way to avoid this issue is to have an in-depth inspection when you move into a previously owned home. This will ensure that your wiring has been properly installed. It is also recommended that you hire a licensed electrician for all your wiring needs, so you can avoid overcrowding in the future.

Incorrect Splices

When two or more wires have been connected together, this is called a splice, and it's one of the most frequently found code violations. Splices that exist outside of junction boxes are against the law and very dangerous. They should only be used temporarily while performing an electrical task. If a splice is necessary, a professional electrician can mount a junction box and ensure that the wires are properly up to code.

Old Knob and Tube Wiring

Homes build in the 1800s and early 1900s utilized knob and tube wiring. While this was once advanced technology, using knob and tube wiring in the modern age is extremely dangerous. The wires aren't grounded, and they can only support very low amperage. Furthermore, even if you were still living like a Victorian in your home, wiring that was installed a hundred years ago will be severely deteriorated. However, when purchasing a previously owned home, or inheriting the home of an older family member, it is important to properly inspect your system. Homes that were built as recently as 1949 may still contain this type of electrical system.
