If the patio is adjacent to a door, start by making sure you have at least one sconce or carriage light next to the door. This provides good general light and an anchor point for the patio lighting scheme.
Define the other borders of the patio space with lighting. One versatile option is post lights, which can be installed nearly anywhere. Or add spotlights near plants or hardscape elements.
Next, add widespread light and a little whimsy by draping a string or two of LED lights across the space. If you live in a climate with big seasonal temperature swings, take these lights inside during the months when you’re not using the patio. This will extend their lifespan.

Yes, many do. To minimize the insects attracted to your string lights, choose low-lumen LED string lights. If you can, go with lights that are tinted yellow, orange, or red. The combination of low heat created by the LED bulbs and the longer wavelength of these bulb colors will greatly reduce the flying bugs.
Choose lights that follow a theme but bring something unique to your patio’s lighting scheme. Use general lighting such as sconces and string lights to provide widespread light throughout the patio area. Illuminate stairs with step lights and use post lights to make walkways safe. Select professionally installed hardwired lights whenever possible for reliable and long-lasting results.
It depends on the purpose each light serves on your patio. About 40 lumens is suitable for low background lighting like string lights. Sconces, can lights, and post lights should fall within the 80 to 120 lumen range.
Only fixtures rated for outdoor use (that are installed correctly) are waterproof and weatherproof. For patio string lights, only choose those that are approved for outdoor use.
