Each year, the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) and Mr. Electric® sponsor the month of May as National Electrical Safety Month. As part of this year’s campaign, the foundation and Mr. Electric are highlighting a safety device that has saved thousands of lives since first being introduced.

While the current National Electrical Code® requires these electrical outlets known as Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs) be installed in all newly constructed homes, this lifesaving technology has never been added to many older homes.

Childproofing your home just got a little easier for parents. The new National Electrical Code® calls for tamper resistant receptacles to be installed in all newly constructed homes which will prevent the seven children a day who need hospital treatment for burns from electrical outlets.

The Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) and Mr. Electric®, as part of National Electrical Safety Month campaign in May, are highlighting tamper resistant receptacles and encouraging parents to adopt them into their homes, whether new or old.

As our reliance on electricity grows, the potential for misuse of home appliances, computers and entertainment equipment means the need for electrical safety awareness for the family is far more important. Educational tools can make learning about electrical safety fun for children, according to the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI), and knowing basic electrical safety principles can help establish lifelong electrical safety habits.

Hazards commonly found in older homes are increasingly causing fires and fatalities in the US.

However, by taking a few simple steps and by incorporating newer technology you can protect your home from many of these dangers. Each year the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) and Mr. Electric® sponsor May as National Electrical Safety Month.

Every day in the U.S. 150 homes will catch fire because of electrical issues. Homeowners can take steps to prevent many of these fires each year, says the Electrical Safety Foundation International and Mr. Electric®, sponsors of May as National Electrical Safety Month.
