GFCI outlets were first required in homes in 1971 in swimming pool areas. Today, GFCI outlets are required anywhere in or around your home where there is an elevated risk of electrical shock due to water. Today’s GFCI outlet requirements include the following:

- Garages (1987)
- Kitchens (1987)
- Unfinished Basements (1990)
- Crawlspaces (1990)
- Wet Bars (1993)
